Nee zeggen is soms moeilijker dan doorgaan. Toch is het vandaag gelukt: te gevaarlijke hellingen, te veel twijfel en een te grote drang om wel hoger te klimmen. Toch besloten om veilig op tijd te stoppen en die laatste paar honderd meter te laten wat ze zijn, die komen nog wel een keer. Als je lang leeft heb je veel tijd om mooie hellingen te skiën. Eenmaal beneden hadden we niet het idee ‘slechts’ een troostprijs te hebben.
Een van mijn lievelingsgebieden weinig kilometer aan pistes, maar fantastisch mooie pistes (en super strak geprepareerd) en een oneindige hoeveelheid off-pise.
Mammut heeft met de Element Barryvox weer een fantastische lawinepieps in handen. En wederom (net als de Pulse) een lawinepieps die als winnaar uit de test komt. Niet zo’n klein beetje ook. Bekijk hieronder de resultaten en hier voor de test.

Snowpulse (dit jaar overgenomen door Mammut) roept een aantal oude cartridges terug die niet door de nieuwe verscherpte controle van mammut heen komen. Ik citeer van de website:
The Snowpulse cartridges for the “Inflation System 1.0” have a defective pressure gauge and must be replaced. Cartridges from the current 2011/12 winter season as well as all Mammut airbag products are not affected by this recall.
On July 1, 2011, Mammut Sports Group AG acquired the Swiss avalanche airbag specialists Snowpulse AG. In the meantime, that company’s production and quality processes have been analyzed and brought up to the level of Mammut’s own quality standards. In the process, it was found that the measures Snowpulse AG had previously taken to assure quality with respect to this problem did not meet Mammut’s high standards.
The Snowpulse cartridges (also called cylinders) are equipped with a pressure gauge, also known as a manometer. For some Snowpulse cartridges, after a certain amount of time a critical defect can appear. In these cartridges, this pressure gauge has developed a leak over time that leads to a drop in air pressure and sometimes to all the air escaping. This can mean that the airbag blows up only insufficiently or not at all. To completely rule out the possibility of this risk occurring, Mammut Sports Group AG has decided to immediately recall and replace all Snowpulse cartridges that were sold of the first generation (Inflation System 1.0).

Which cartridges are affected by the recall?
All Snowpulse cartridges of the first generation, compatible with Inflation System 1.0, 207 and 300 bar.
How can I tell which cartridges are actually affected by the recall?
All cartridges whose valve looks like the one in the illustration and whose pressure gauge has not yet been replaced.
The new Snowpulse cartridges for Inflation System 2.0 as well as cartridges from the Mammut Ride Airbag R.A.S. are not affected by the recall.
Inderdaad dit jaar hebben we minder sneeuw dan in het noorden. Maar de vraag is hoeveel sneeuw heb je nodig en hier blijven de liften wel open , althans ‘s ochtends dan. ‘s Middags zorgde de wind ervoor dat de liften in ‘Serre Che’ ook dicht moesten, maar toen hadden wij onze poederruns er al op zitten.
Sarah Burke is aan de gevolgen van een val tijdens een training in de Half Pipe overleden. Sarah was een wereldberoemde freestyle en freeride skiester die in vele films en op vele posters te zien was. Een grensverleggende skiester die het bewijs was dat dames niets hoeven onder te doen voor de mannen in de ski wereld. Iedereen die regelmatige skifilms bekijkt heeft Sarah Burke zeker al wel eens gezien.
Het ongeluk
Vorige week dinsdag maakte Sarah een op het eerste gezicht onschuldige val in de superpipe in Park City, Utah. De val scheurde echter een vertebrale slagader waardoor Sarah en hartstilstand kreeg, deze zorgde voor zuurstoftekort in haar hersenen. Ondanks een het feit dat Sarah snel geopereerd werd, is zij gisteravond in het ziekenhuis aan haar verwondingen overleden. Het officiële statement is hieronder te lezen:

Groundbreaking Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke passed away at 9:22 a.m., January 19, 2012, at the University of Utah Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident on the Eagle Superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. She was training for upcoming winter events.
As the result of Sarah’s fall, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, one of the four major arteries supplying blood to the brain. The rupture of this artery led to a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which caused Sarah to go into cardiac arrest on the scene. Emergency personnel responded and CPR was administered on the scene during which time she remained without a pulse or spontaneous breathing. Studies in the University of Utah Hospital Emergency Department indicated that she retained brainstem function. She was placed on life support and a protocol of therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. An angiogram indicated the site of arterial bleeding, and on Wednesday, January 11 the injured artery was successfully repaired.
After the operation, numerous neurological examinations, electrodiagnostic tests and imaging studies revealed that Sarah sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest, resulting in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with Sarah’s wishes, her organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others.
While early reports in the media stated that Sarah’s injury was a traumatic brain injury, it is important to note that Sarah’s condition was the result of a lack of oxygen to the brain during cardiac arrest.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Sarah’s dear friends for their love and support, and for traveling to Salt Lake City to comfort the family.
They would also like to thank the University of Utah Hospital and her physicians and care team in the Neuro Critical Care Unit for their incredible care and compassion.
The family was moved by the sincere and heartfelt sympathy expressed by people inspired by Sarah from all around the world. Sarah Burke was een beroemdheid in de freeski wereld. Zij heeft er mede voor gezorgd dat de Superpipe (de half pipe maar dan voor skiërs) op de Olympische spelen komt. Tot haar ongeluk was zij waarschijnlijk de grootste kanshebber op de gouden medaille in deze discipline. Maar het was niet alleen het freestyle skiën waar zij in uitblonk, ook in freeride stond ze meer dan haar mannetje. Keihard knalde ze door hellingen naar beneden.
Gevaar
Dit soort ongelukken zullen de discussie over het gevaar van deze sporten weer doen losbarsten. Maar atleten op dit niveau weten precies welke risico’s ze lopen en zullen ondanks die risico’s niets laten.
Om nooit te vergeten

Het is al een hype aan het worden op internet, maar voor wie hem nog niet gezien heeft….
Van mij mag de Grand Area in het lijstje ‘mooiste bergen’ in ieder geval ‘s winters. Wat een top en elke skiêr die deze top vanuit Briancon ziet kan maar een ding wensen en dat is het skiën van deze top. Niet heel steil maar de helling ligt wel vol met rotsbanden dus vallen blijft niet zo’n heel goed idee vooral omdat de sneeuw vaak hard is. Gisteren stond ik weer op deze top die toch stiekem altijd een beetje ‘alpiene’ is. Dat maakt het alleen maar meer genieten!
